"Hey, Allura look..."
"Huh?? What now?"
"This picture fell out of that old book on the shelf"
"Hmmm, let me have a look at that...
...whoa, look at what they're wearing"
"I kno...and look at her!!..
"...that girl in the purple and black suit looks hawt"
"Oh my god, your such a pervert!" Allura shouts to her younger brother Aiden.
"What? What did I do? All I said was that she was pretty"
Aiden pouts and stares with his hazel brown puppy dog eyes to his sister knowing she can't resist his cuteness. Allura though only older than Aiden by three years likes to think of herself as a mature young adult compared to her younger sibling.
"Uh huh, Sure that’s what you meant" Allura said in a smug tone.
"Whoa!!!"
"Huh, what. what’s wrong?!... Allura, are you alright?"
"Who is that? He's cute" she says gazing at the picture of a boy that’s sitting beside the girl Aiden had pointed out as being pretty.
The two were so busy staring at the picture that they didn't hear anyone step into the room.
"Hey, Whatchu two got there?" came a female's voice from over the counter table.
As Aiden and Allura gasped in excitement they turned and leaped towards the voice.
"Auntie Rayne!!!" the two shout as they jump into her arms causing her to fall back into the couch behind her.
"Wow, look how big you got Aiden, how old are you now?...and you Mrs. Allura look more and more like your mother each time I see you".
Aiden looked up, still clinging to Rayne "hehe" he giggled "I'm 7 Auntie"
Allura's cheeks turned red as she tried to accept the compliment. She;d heard, her mother was the most beautiful women ever, and she always hoped to look just like her as a grown up.
"So, what were you two looking at so intently over there?" Rayne asked curiously raising a brow as she leaned over to were the two sat before they pounced her.
"This!..." Aiden said as he leaped off Rayne's lap to retrieve the picture.
"Oh!" Rayne gasped..."I remember this...this was the day of the..." Rayne paused.
"Who's that?" Aiden muttered pointing to the girl in the purple and black outfit as Allura pointed to the guy beside her "and this guy?"
Rayne stared at the picture for a moment
"Oh..thats your...or should I say would be your...hmmm...would you guys like to hear a story?"
The two look up starry-eyed at Rayne. Allura sits on the floor and crosses her legs Indian style while Aiden crawls into Rayne's lap.
"Yes. Pwease" Aiden replies as Allura nods.
"Ok, hmmm lets see where should I start? " Rayne looked at the photo and then thought to herself. She wanted the story to start out interesting to lure the kids in while still tying in or leading up to the event held in the picture and answering who the two people they were interested in were.
"Ok.. lets see...well" As Rayne began to tell her story Aiden rests his head on her breast and begins to nuzzle and wiggle his little body into a comfortable position as Allura leans in anxiously waiting to find out who the guy with the sunglasses and cat ears is.
"In college I had the opportunity to meet a group of friends I'll never forget. Though we all had different majors and lots of classes and work to do we always found time to hang out and have fun. We were diligent workers and all shared a love for the Asian culture"
"Auntie Rayne, what’s diligent mean?" Aiden asked in a soft tone.
Rayne looked down at the child, she could tell he was nervous as if he expected her to snap at him for not knowing the definition of the word. She smiled her warm smile and replied in a calm tone.
"Diligent means..."
"It means hard worker, someone who focuses on getting things done" Allura blurted out before Rayne could finish.
"That’s correct" Rayne smiled and then went back to her story.
"So a group of my friends made this organization for others like us to hang out and share in our love for Asian culture. Back at that time we were really into Anime, video games, and Japanese/Korean music. The organization was a gateway for us to express the things we liked while also having fun events to relieve the stress from all the classes, homework, exams, etc.; We use to have lots of fun events, the President and Vice-President got together and decided it would be fun if we held concerts twice a year where we would sing songs to the public. I, myself never sung a song by myself. I was much to shy for that, but I did perform in a few group performances. It was indeed truly exhilarating."
"Au..Aunti....Auntie Rayne!!" Allura yelled frantically waving her hands back and forth as if signaling a plane to come down and land. "You were suppose to tell us bout these two people remember?"
"Oh, hehe yes," Rayne giggled and tried to shake off the slight embarrassment felt from reminiscing in front of the children. "Ok so one of the events we ended up having annually was a Maid cafe."
"What’s a maid cafe?" Aiden asked once again in a soft curious tone, this time looking to his sister Allura waiting for her to blurt out the answer, but she didn’t...instead she turned her head to the side and looked off into the distance as if the question wasn’t heard.
"Do you know what a Maid cafe is Allura?" Rayne asked before she explained anything.
"No mam" Allura said in a low slightly embarrassed tone.
"A maid cafe is like a restaurant, where the waiters and waitresses dress up like maids and serve the customers as such. Many maid cafe's have different themes so they don’t always walk around as maids. We did a test run one year and it was a huge success, so we decided to do it again the following year. This photo was taken from that event."
"OH!!! I get it so this was a Cat themed Maid Cafe?" shouted Allura happily.
"Not quite" Rayne smiled and continued "Nekos or Cats as you called them were a theme, but they weren’t the only themes. During this Maid cafe we had Teachers, Ninjas, Yakuza, Nekos, Maids, and Butlers."
Rayne turned her head to poor little Aiden who didn’t raise his hand or bother to ask a question this time, but whose face showed clearly he didn’t know all in all what everything was.
" A yakuza is like a Japanese mafia person, or thug" she said slowly raising her hand to gently pinch his nose.
Aiden giggled "oh, hehe how did you know I didnt know what that was?"
Rayne smirked "I know things too ya know" she said with a slight giggle. "Your so adorable,".
"Anyway..." Allura interjected.
"Oh yes, so these two decided to be nekos or cat people...well actually if I remember correctly "He" was suppose to be a Neko Yakuza Butler, and she was just a Sexy Black Neko. They look cute together don’t they?"
Allura Nods "He looks really happy, but who is he? You still haven’t told us. He looks so cute too." She continues to go on in a high pitched voice before letting out a squee.
"There's a reason for that...anyway so they were in love and we all thought they were perfect for each other. You would hardly ever see them apart except for when they were in class, and even then the chances were rare since he would pick her up from class or she would wait outside for him. They were so adorable together. That night everything went perfect, the two spent the entire day serving customers and everyone enjoyed seeing their cat love hehe...but then one day something happened. I'm not exactly sure what, but the happy couple were suddenly separated and no one knew why,"
"Awww oh no, did they get ever get back together? Does anyone know why they separated? Have you spoken to either one of them since college, maybe they got back together, and got married, and had kids?" suddenly Allura was anxious to know what happened, she was no longer concerned with who the cute guy in the picture was, she was now wrapped up in their love story and wanted to know more.
"Well I'm sure there are a few people who would have their own assumptions as to why this couple that seemed so perfect split, but no one was willing to test their theories by asking either him or her if they were right. It's a rather touchy situation when your friends, you want to know everything that happened, but your role is to be there for support based on what they tell you. You should never go prying into other people's own personal lives etc, ya know?"
Just then a voice rang throughout the house. It echoed through corridors and made its way to the library where Rayne and the children resided.
"Allura! Aiden! Dinner is ready!"
"Opps, I guess I'll have to finish my story once you too finish eating" Rayne said with a smile.
"Aren't you coming to dinner with us? Allura asked.
"Rayne, you up there with the kids? Dinner is ready come on down!"
Rayne laughed a bit to herself before turning to address Allura. "I guess so".
Aiden was so comfortable he nearly dozed off tucked tightly and clung to Rayne's body. He looked up and slowly wiped away at his eyes. He exhaled a slight yawn and then gently lifted himself out of her lap.
"Thank you for the story Auntie Rayne" he said in his soft voice still wiping the sleep from his eyes.
"No problem sweetie" she replied as she stood to her feet, stretching a bit to allow the blood to flow once again.
Rayne placed the picture on the counter table beside her and made her way to the staircase. As she headed downstairs Aiden peered over and slipped the picture back into his pocket. Allura was too busy tidying up to notice what her younger brother had done.
As they made their way to the dining room they sat happily waiting for everyone to be seated. The table was adorned with silver and gold. The table was full of all of their favorite dishes. Spanish Olive Rice, Pork chops, Macaroni and Cheese, Garlic Bread, and more. The kid's father entered and sat at the head of the table.
"Thank you for this food to which I have prepared for my family. Thank you for good friends and I pray that you continue to watch over us and grace us with your blessings".
"Amen!"
"Amen!"
"Amen!"
Their father looked up and opened his eyes to the sight of his two beautiful children and then looked over to Rayne.
"You may all dig in" he said with a smile, "but, leave room for dessert we have Strawberry Cheesecake and Lemon Marang Pie".
Aiden's eyes lit with excitement as he scarfed down all of the food in front of him. He couldn’t wait to allow his taste buds the savory satisfaction of tasting his father's famous cheesecake..again. After dinner their father clears the table with the help of Allura. Rayne and Aiden make their way towards the living room to sit and relax. Allura joined them a few moments later and sat besides Rayne. Aiden waiting for Allura to sit comfortably then adjusted his body to Rayne's form as he did before.
"Auntie Rayne?" He paused reaching into his pocket to pull out the picture from earlier.
"Yes, dear?" Rayne replied slightly shocked as she sees the boy pull out the picture.
"Can you finish the story?" he gazed up and gave those hazel brown puppy dog eyes to ensure she would say yes.
Just as Rayne was about to speak in walked the kid's father. He wiped the sweat from his brow with a paper towel and made his way over to the group.
"Ah, everything is cleaned and put away," he turned to Rayne "before you leave I packed you a plate to take home".
Taking a moment to catch his breathe he looks over to Aiden.
"Hey Kiddo, whatcha got there?"
As he makes his way over to Aiden, he relieves him of the picture and looks at it. He stares at it for a long good while before gazing up to Rayne.
"Daddy, maybe you could answer the question we've been wanting to know ever since we found this picture?" Allura blurted out looking as Rayne, who she knows prolonged with a story.
Their father simply stared at the picture without saying a word. It was like he was reliving the moment as if he were there, or was trying hard to remember the event. Eventually his daughter's words pierced his ears and snapped him out of the daze.
"Yes, sweetie?"
"Who is this guy and Aiden wants to know who the girl is, and do you know what happened between them, and have you spoken with either one of them recently? Auntie Rayne told us they use to be so in love and then something happened."
"Did she now?" he said cutting her off as he peered up at her. "Well, lets see..." he paused trying to reflect and remember all the questions he was just asked. "Yes, I know why they split" He sat across from Rayne, Aiden, and Allura. "Ya see, sometimes people fall in love and things are perfect, but then life happens and they're forced to make choices. Other times people let doubt get in the way and it slowly feeds on their mind until they become paranoid and end up forcing their lover away"
"Which one was it?" Allura interjected.
"AND.." her father said boldly to show that he clearly wasn’t finished speaking "sometimes people find their soul mates, but due to circumstances they meet too soon and need to allow each other the time and space to grow and gain more experiences".
"But..you still didn’t answer my question" Allura said with a pout folding her arms now slightly disappointed that she even asked the question.
"I'll tell you the reason why the split, when your older" her father replied with a smirk, "In the mean time, I spoke to him most recently, and he's doing fine.  A few years after the breakup he finally moved on and allowed his heart to seek love again. He met a nice girl and had children, but their mother wasn’t his soul mate and they didn’t stay together. Since then he's found happiness in his children and doesn’t look for love. In fact last I spoke to him, he told me he knows who his soul mate is, however it would seem they weren't meant to be together in this lifetime".
"Oh wow..thats sooo" she doesn’t even get to finish her statement and she finds herself crying uncontrollably.
Aiden, who was quiet this whole time finally spoke up "Daddy, Do you think he still loves her?"
"Yes son, when you truly love someone or something, you never truly stop"
"And..and.." sniffling between words "How do you know that he still loves her?" Allura asked.
Their father gave a slight chuckle at his ferocious daughter "Because, the man in this picture...is me"
With that said he stood and walked over to a nearby bookshelf. He reached for a black book with a gold rose embedded in it’s brim , opened it and placed the picture within. He turned slightly.
"Rayne, do mind keeping an eye on them while I go take a shower? The remotes right over there and you can put a movie on if you'd like."
As he made his way upstairs to the bathroom, no one said a word. Rayne looked at Allura, whose face was still frozen in shock that the cute guy in the picture was her father.
"What's wrong dear?" she said with a chuckle.
From upstairs some music is heard. Their father often liked to take his laptop in the bathroom and play music while he showered. Allura always thought it was weird, but after swooning over a picture of him when he was young she wasn’t sure what to think anymore. Allura turned to the bookshelf.
"Hmmm, I wonder what that book was, and why he put it in there".
She made her way over to the bookshelf and reached for the book her father had recently touched. As she pulled it out she looked at the cover. There were no words.
"Hmm, what’s this?"
She stared at it harder. There was a ornate picture of a rose in bloom, but if you stared hard enough you'd see there was a small print engraved on a pedal with the numbers 3112. As she opened the book to the page where the picture lied, she found some writing.
"Hey, look..." she said as she read it aloud.
""They say the mind bends and twists
to deal with the horrors of life.
Sometimes it bends so much
that it snaps..."
Allura looked up with tears in her eyes as she closed the book and placed it back on the shelf. She finally understood.
